From the upcoming Cooper-Hewitt Solos modern design exhibition, there are a couple of good features to bear in mind. It would be the first museum exhibition of contemporary Israeli design in the United States. And, from January 27 to April 23, 2006, you could admire the very smart Bin Seat of Ami Drach and Dov Ganchrow.
Their chair was already selected by the Re-Think and Re-Cycle MACEF design 2005 awards. For people interested in how to set such a seat, the steps are briefly shown here.
“Is-realism”. Although the design didn’t get a prize, it shows a very contemporary strength which lays in its realism, its philosophy. “Israeli design focuses on the concept and not the styling, essence or refinement” explained Tarazi, who is also presenting his own work in the exhibition, to the Haaretz newspaper.
“We chose works with a philosophical direction that investigate how objects are created and how to make surprising uses of everyday materials,” added Ellen Lupton, a curator of contemporary design at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and member of the exhibition head staff.
“The works do not discuss elegance, beauty or innovation. They also are not sentimental or decorative. For the most part, they are intellectual, occasionally humorous, but with a sense of realism.” The best that can be said for this “garage design” is it won’t harm environment.
